And so it begins

First post up on this blog. Here I’ll be posting about 3d/2d art news, tutorials, sketches, tips, tricks, hints, and more! I’ll be making a post every day. It’s important to get resources together for new artists. I could have really used tutorials, news, and hints when I was first starting out!

Don’t want to model it? Scan it!
New art technology comes out all the time and here is something quite interesting. This camera digitizes any item you scan. As a 3d modeler this makes me a little nervous, I don’t want to be replaced by a machine, but it’s still pretty cool anyway. And somebody has to make what it scans in clay first to begin with.

This scanner is different from the full body or head scanners typically used. These scanners are extremely expensive and while effective, still have problems with scanning organic forms. How expensive? Most companies can’t afford to even keep a full body scanner in house and have to rent use of one. This new scanner is a hand held and would be good for small items and props; however scanning an entire person would probably be more difficult with this scanner than the current models.

So I pose this question to you: Do you think in the future all 3d modeling will be done by scanning real life models? Will 3d modelers become sculptors of clay or plasticine instead? Guess we’ll have to wait and see, until them I’m breaking out my clay tools. Got to be prepared because you never know when that modeling job you apply for isn’t asking for 3dmax or Maya but instead “must be proficient in Sculpty”.
